Backyard Organization
Fall is nearly here and summer winding down. You know what that means . . . backyard chaos! This time of year, the extra time outside can feel amazing but if you don’t stay ahead of the organizing game, your backyard can quickly get out of hand. These backyard organization ideas will help you breeze into fall while utilizing your space to its full potential.
We’ll start with the organizing process and then move into some of my favorite backyard storage ideas.
Step 1: Create Organization Zones
The first step to organizing your backyard is sorting through everything. There’s a lot of overlap between outdoor items and garage storage, so be sure not to let this project turn into something bigger than you’re ready for.
Before you begin, grab a garbage bag and a few boxes:
Toss broken items into the trash (or set aside for the dump).
Place unused items in a donation box.
As you sort, think in terms of zones to make your backyard organization more effective.
Common Backyard Organization Zones
- Kids Toys & Equipment
- Yard Work Equipment
- Gardening Supplies
- Food & Drink
- Entertaining
Once sorted, purge immediately. Don’t wait! Hauling donations and clearing space right away will create momentum. Then, decide where each zone should go based on function: toys down low for kids, yard equipment together, garden supplies by the garden, and so on.
Step 2: Backyard Storage Ideas
There are endless backyard storage solutions online, but remember: simple is best. Don’t overwhelm yourself with elaborate Pinterest projects unless you’re ready for the work. Start with what you have and add more later if needed.
Tips for effective backyard storage:
Label everything clearly so family members know where items belong.
Store items where you’d naturally look for them.
Leave room for future storage needs.
Kids Toys & Equipment Storage
The key to toy storage is making it easy for kids to put things away themselves.
Water Toys
Have a pool in your backyard or you’re regulars at the neighborhood pool? Figure out a way to allow all the water toys to hang and dry, thus hopefully preventing mold and mildew from growing. Placing in direct sunlight is also a great way to quick dry. Love the photo above. Simple but effective.
Bikes, Scooters, & Ride-On Toys
A simple bike stand can keep things orderly and creates a place for kids to park their rides. Though I just warned against big Pinterest projects, I do love this Covered Kiddie Car Parking Garage that works to hide large colorful plastic items you may not want all over the yard.
Sports Equipment
Bins, racks, or barrels keep equipment together. Label containers for easy return and retrieval.
Yard Work & Gardening Storage
If possible, use an outdoor shed for frequently used items. Hang long-handled tools like rakes and shovels, and store smaller items in sturdy bins. Keep it tidy, labeled, and easy to find everything.
Hose Storage
Keep a hose at each outdoor spigot to avoid dragging them around. Use hose hangers or bins, and store sprinklers and attachments nearby.
Food, Drink & Entertaining Supplies
For BBQs or outdoor meals, keep essentials in a patio cabinet or your outdoor kitchen. Store napkins, utensils, and other items neatly out of sight but easy to grab (potentially in a weatherproof container to protect from the elements and Mother Nature).
Create an In & Out Station
Always running inside for sunscreen, towels, or a picnic blanket? Create an “In & Out Station” near the back door with a bin or basket. Teach your family to use it to keep items from ending up scattered across the yard.
Final Thoughts on Backyard Organization
Backyard organization doesn’t have to be complicated. Take it one zone at a time, use simple storage solutions, and create systems your whole family can follow. Remember: some organization is always better than none.
